First Cooling Studies
In order to decide between different cooling options simulations with different cooling materials and ticknesses have been made and their impact to the energy resolution was studied.
For the simulation all 48 submodules with all crystals (768) used. The submodules include the crystals, alveoli, alu capsules and inserts. Furthermore, the VIP and the cover was the same for all simulations:
- VIP thickness: 20mm (front, inner and outer)
- Cover thickness: 1mm aluminum
A | B | C | D | |
---|---|---|---|---|
front cooling | - | 10mm CoolingShellMix | 16mm CoolingShellMix | 10mm CoolingShellMix |
inner cooling | - | 10mm CoolingShellMix | 10mm CoolingShellMix | 1mm Aluminum |
CoolingShellMix: 60% HDPE + 40% Water/Methanol
In the image a cut drawing of the EMC with the submodules and the cooling is shown. The thickness of the cooling (blue) and its material is changed in the simulation. For simplification the inner cooling is represented by a pipelike shape and the front cooling is represented by a round plate.
For each geometry electrons with a fixed energy were shot on the EMC. The electrons were generated with PRIMAUniformDiscGenerator and the distance between the gun position and the front surface of the crystals was 1200mm. For each energy (100, 500, 1000 and 1500 MeV) 10 million electrons were generated.
For every crystal the deposited energy of the cluster, where this crystal was the central crystal, was filled in a histogram and the novosibirsk function was plotted. Thus the energy resolution for every crystal could be derived.
The images show the histograms for crystals 0, 4, 11, 12, 14 and 32 for an electron energy of 1000MeV for example B. The x-axis is normalised to the energy of the incoming electron.
The positions of the crystals are shown in the image below. It is obvious that the energy distribution for a crystal in the center is much sharper than the distribution for a crystal on the border.
The energy resolution for all crystals and the different cooling options are shown in the following pictures:
